EACMFS was established in 1970 by a group of innovative European surgeons who were keen to advance the specialty. It has become the most prominent and highly respected professional group for the specialty in Europe and has a high profile in other parts of the World. The objectives of the Association are to promote cranio-maxillo-facial surgery in theory and practice and attempt to establish uniform training requirements for the specialty in Europe and encourage these worldwide. The main aim was to endeavour to ensure that specialist training in oral and maxillo-facial surgery was based on a solid foundation of dual medical and dental qualifications and core training in surgery.
Responsibility for harmonisation of qualifications and training later passed to the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) Section of Oro-Maxillo-Facial Surgery & Stomatology which published a Charter on Training of medical Specialists in OMFS in 1994. With the establishment of the European Board for OMFS (EBOMFS) the RQ (Recognition of Qualification) assessments were introduced in 1996 leading to the Fellow of the EBOMFS qualification. EACMFS works in close liaison with these bodies and the RQ assessments are held simultaneously with the Congresses of EACMFS.
EACMFS is above all a scientific society aiming to:
- Facilitate access to education at all levels of experience (from trainee to qualified specialist)
- Provide a portfolio of educational courses
- Promote exchanges between units
- Bring together colleagues to share and advance clinical expertise
